The cold breath of the nightly mist rolls in, covering all. But can it rule over all?

I.

Tonight, fog rolls in

and there is nothing to see

from the backyard ledge.

II.

Can’t see the sea,

can’t see the curves of the bay

or the mountains near.

III.

The mist dampens all

and snuffs out the city lights.

with its light drizzle.

IV.

The din of the streets

becomes a distant echo

on this cold midnight.

V.

Still, the street lights break

through an open patch of fog

--let’s us know it’s here.

VI.

But the mist robs heat

and breaths frost upon the streets.

It rules, quietly.

VII.

Roads become so slick

and the grass on the lawn weeps.

The fog becomes king.

VIII.

But, through all of this,

a distinctive sound is clear.

Waves crash on the shore.

IX.

Despite a mile west

and shrouded in the thick mist,

waves makes itself known.

X.

And the mighty fog

cannot silence the ocean,

for the waves will speak.

XI.

Thus this thick mist

knows its place in nature

--second to the sea.

XII.

No fog will cover,

nor will it try to smother

the crash of those waves.

XIII.

Suddenly, this place

Is not shrouded in coldness.

It still lives and breathes.
