The Clocks Go Back Tonight
Winter is getting everything ready to call

The Clocks Go Back Tonight
The clocks go back tonight,
And back we go to dark.
The evenings that were bright,
Leave shadows in the park.
Winter is round the corner,
With colder days in store.
He is walking up the pathway,
To knock upon the door.
I did not ask him in,
But he will come somehow,
And settle in my garden,
Among the branches now.
He will breathe upon the windows,
And creep beneath the door.
I will pull my slippers closer,
And wish for warmth once more.
The clocks go back tonight,
The curtains will be drawn.
We will leave the world outside,
Until another dawn.
The garden chairs stand empty,
Where we sat out till late.
The flowers bow their tired heads,
Beside the garden gate.
I miss those lovely evenings,
The washing on the line,
A little breeze across my face,
The last of summer sunshine.
Now we must wait for summer,
And sunshine at the door,
And looking at the months ahead,
It feels like forevermore.
But underneath the frozen soil,
Where nothing seems to grow,
The bulbs I planted wait for spring,
Though winter does not know.
One morning I shall find a shoot,
Beside the garden wall,
A little green reminder,
He cannot keep it all.
The clocks go back tonight,
But spring will come once more,
And when she walks along my path,
I will open wide the door.
