THE CIRCUS CAME TO TOWN YESTERDAY
It turned from sadness to tears over night

THE CIRCUS CAME TO TOWN YESTERDAY
The circus came to town,
Only yesterday,
But something wasn’t right,
Something had gone astray.
The clown he looked miserable,
Like he’d cried all night,
I knew something was wrong,
Something wasn’t right.
Are you okay? I asked him,
He said, no not really,
I’ve lost my little monkey,
And I’m feeling really silly.
Oh dear, where can he be?
I had a tear in my eye,
Don’t worry darling,
Please, please don’t cry.
I’ll find your little monkey,
As fast as I can,
I couldn’t leave him crying,
That poor unhappy man.
I looked around the town,
In backyards and sheds,
I looked in farmer’s fields,
Where the cattle were fed.
No monkey could be found,
So I thought that was it,
I couldn’t bloody find him,
So I walked back to the tent.
Then there I seen a man,
In a navy suit and hat,
With a little pocket watch,
What a gent was that.
I tapped him on the shoulder,
Excuse me sir, I said,
I’m looking for a monkey,
Has he passed here instead?
The little gent turned round,
And looked straight at me,
Oh my God, I thought,
It couldn’t bloody be.
That wasn’t any gent,
Standing there you see,
That was the clown’s monkey,
Looking back at me.
Where had that monkey been?
I really couldn’t say,
All dressed up like a gent,
On his little day away.
Thank you God, I whispered,
He’s come back to me,
Now I’ll make the clown happy,
Just you wait and see.
We walked into the tent,
The clown started to shout,
Doing his somersaults,
And dancing all about.
The monkey joined right in,
His jacket hit the floor,
He picked up all the weights,
Then went and lifted more.
People passing outside,
Could see through the door,
They stopped to watch the monkey,
Then came back for more.
The man was selling tickets,
Like never before,
By only half past two,
He’d sold thousands more.
The show sold out that day,
For the next two weeks,
The clown came up and thanked me,
Tears rolled down his cheeks.
He hugged his little monkey,
And held him really tight,
The clown who’d cried that morning,
Was smiling now tonight.
The tent was full of laughter,
The monkey stole the show,
Where he’d been that day,
I suppose we’ll never know.
I’ll remember that little gent,
And the monkey that I found,
In his little navy suit,
With his watch swinging round.
The circus came to town,
And something wasn’t right,
But when his monkey came home,
The whole circus lit up that night.
