The Change Maker
“Be the change you want to see in the world”- Gandhi
I don’t have to be a change maker
To make a change
I can live my life
In the everyday mundane
On a random Monday
At 3 pm
With the sun at its peak,
in the evening
When I lay my eyes down to sleep.
No I don’t even have to speak
My mouth can be closed
With my marching feet,
And I don’t need no degree
To understand the things
I’ve felt and seen.
If you’re looking for field work
Something fancy to add
To your resume net worth
Then look no further
I’m an expert in this field
I’ve got invisible badges of honor
To add to my invisible shield.
If you ask the educator
I’m an amateur
But my life is not a hobby
I play on my spare time
And I bet you three quarters
One nickel and two dimes
That my two cents
are something you cannot
Afford to set aside.
You walk into the experience
Knowing what it’s like
Beyond the curtain
When it’s my random Tuesday morning
The luxury you can afford
To make your thesis statement
“Priceless things I can not afford to lose”
I wrote that whole paper
Without an acceptance letter
From your school.
Just face it,
You’re a goner without me
You’re like the bully
Who steals my lunch money
Gives me swirlies
As bribery to help you
Pass your exam
So you have a chance
At the big leagues.
But I am the big leagues
The big leagues were made for me
I built it with my two hands
But my face was left out
Of interviews and questioning
My typical Wednesday evening
Not fitting your quota
The image of who I should be.
I’m not a change maker
But I’ve made a lot of change
Not enough to afford my meals
But in my natural way
I’m observed with expensive equipment
That would break the chains
Of being the corporate slave
But this is my mundane
My every single day.
