Moose sprawled on the rug, his golden fur haloed by the weak sunlight filtering through the window. The room was silent but charged, like a cloud ready to burst. Moose’s tail thumped once against the floor.

Velvet’s ears twitched. “You’re blocking the light,” she said, her voice cool and measured. Moose’s head lifted at the sound of her voice. His tail thumped again. “Hi, Velvet! You never talk to me. This is great!” Velvet sighed.

“It’s not great. It’s necessity. Move.” Moose didn’t move. Instead, he tilted his head. “Why are you always up there?”“Because it’s safe,” she replied, her gaze flickering to the window.
