The cat

she must sleep.

I stay still and calm

The cat needs to sleep

She’s digging her curled talons

Like very fine friendly needles

Into my stomach and boob

Gotta hold in the pain

No sudden movements

The cat needs to sleep

A warm womb of blankets

I’m in an awkward sideways bent position

One hand behind my head

The other a contorted uncomfortable mount for the phone

The cat is comfortable

She purrs deeply, rumbling the dark space between

The blankets, bed, and me

The sharp talons lightly piercing my gut

She’s getting comfy

The cat

I am forgoing any semblance of comfort

Because the cat needs to sleep
