The Calm Exit

I left quietly, and that was my victory.

By Milan MilicPublished 8 months ago 1 min read

I didn’t slam the door.

No movie moment,

no screaming, no plate-shattering truth.

I used to think leaving had to be loud

to count.

﹁﹂

But I was tired

not sleepy tired,

soul tired,

the kind that makes your hands careful

with everything.

﹁﹂

So I folded my shirts

like I was finishing a task at work.

I packed my charger,

the book you never opened,

My favorite mug

with the chipped rim.

﹁﹂

You talked like normal.

That was the strangest part.

You asked what I wanted for dinner

while I was quietly unhooking my life

from your life.

﹁﹂

My heart beat steady,

like it had already moved out.

I felt almost nothing

and then a sudden wave of grief

for the version of me

who stayed so long,

waiting for a reason “big enough.”

﹁﹂

At the door, I paused,

not for you

for myself.

I breathed in

and didn’t bargain,

didn’t explain,

didn’t offer one last chance

to misunderstand me.

﹁﹂

I walked out calmly.

And somehow, that was the win

not revenge,

not drama,

just peace taking its place

in my hands.
