The Cage

Can this bird be free?

I live in a cage of my own design

And by the vultures who circle me

With the arrows of doubt and hesitation

And I shoot myself to the depths of the sea

With talons sharp as swords

The vultures dig in their claws

I'm taken away to a prison

Where on display, on-lookers see my flaws

I could break the locks and doors

Run and fly to my destiny

But I must admit that I'm always

Fearful of what could be

What could be the dangers of taking a chance

The dangers of owning my true self

The vultures are aware of this

They use it to keep me caged on the shelf

Sitting behind bars like a bird with no wings

Unsightly eyes stare at me with curiosity

Is it my judgment at hand? No.

Who cares? Must give myself generosity.

This songbird starts to sing a melody so great

My cage rattles with harmonious vibrations

The vultures are startled, not expecting a fight

From me so fragile, yet bound with determinations

The hinges fall apart, the cage is open

The on-lookers cheer for an encore

So instead of fleeing to what should be freedom

I give them more
