The Bride of Midnight
She wore a dress of faded lace,
With sorrow written on her face.
And every night beside the sea,
She waited where her love would be.
Her lover sailed one winter day,
And promised he would never stray.
He kissed her lips and held her tight,
Then vanished in the fading light.
The years went by, the seasons changed,
Her heart grew cold, her mind estranged.
Yet still she walked the lonely shore,
And waited for him evermore.
One stormy night she heard his name,
And felt a love she could not tame.
Then from the waves a figure rose,
A man in dark and tattered clothes.
He stood before her, pale and cold,
His eyes were dark, his manner bold.
He reached for her with trembling hand,
And stood beside her on the sand.
She cried and fell into his arms,
For death had stolen all his charms.
Yet in his eyes she saw the flame,
Of love that time could never tame.
He told her of the ocean deep,
Where drowned and broken lovers sleep.
And begged her to become his bride,
Beneath the restless, rolling tide.
She kissed his lips without a fear,
And whispered words he longed to hear.
If death is where our hearts must be,
Then take me to eternity.
The waves rose high above the shore,
And swept them both away once more.
The moon looked down upon the sea,
Where two lost souls were finally free.
And when the midnight bells are heard,
The sea repeats each loving word.
For on the rocks where wild winds roam,
Two lovers find their final home.
