The Bogeyman

But Everybody’s Someone’s Monster, Right?

By Kelli Sheckler-AmsdenPublished 5 days ago • 1 min read

The real tragedy of life, is when men are afraid of the light (Plato)

*

Once condemned to shadowed halls

Or grave stones wrapped in metal bars

Small children’s rooms, under the beds

Where nightmares settle in their heads

Down dead end streets and deep dark woods

We were discreet, followed the rules

But nowadays, the rules are loose

We can meander where we choose

No longer locked in crowded closets

No backyard sheds with outdoor faucets

No, now we're free to employ the web

Infiltrate fear, while IN your bed

Snapchat feeds and horror flicks

Terrorize millions, with just one click

We don't depend on urban legends

We scare the globe in virtual seconds

Online imaginations fraught with fear

Like earbuds, whisper in your ears

You unscrew the bulb, can't trust the light

made friend with creatures in the night

But we’re all someone’s monster, right

Keeping the bogeyman alive
