The Bird Outside My Window

Stream of Consciousness Written in Real Time as I Sat Pondering, Weak and Weary, Over Many a Quaint and Curious Volume of Forgotten Lore

Alessandro Magnasco: Singing Birds - I chose this painting because I found it interesting that there are more people than birds in it, and we are left to wonder whether it is only the birds stuck inside--like the people--who sing, or if others call to them from beyond the window.

Outside my window, a bird sings a lonely song.

Gyrating desires and instincts pour forth

Happily yet from a heart full to bursting,

Generating a symphony just for me,

Elevating my soul to tangibility,

Yearning for my own place in the tree,

Eliminating the need to earn a place--

Eh? What's that? The bird is silent now,

Which inspires my toothless mouth to grin,

Not upset at the performance's end--

Delighted! Overjoyed instead to know:

What once was a lonely call

Lured another to the waiting branch

To do whatever it is that birds do.
