The Battle Within Rages

Will she win the fight

Her heart beats double staccato,

And she questions what it is she is contemplating,

Beginning to believe she’s finally lost her mind,

Taking on more than she can chew amid instigating.

**

As the sun sinks behind the horizon,

She lays her head at night filled with concern,

Self-doubt bottled within her head,

Wondering if she’s too old to ever learn.

**

And the next morning when the sun winks her rays,

She wakes to the ponderous of forever dread,

She questions her abilities, her very wisdom,

Deciding she’d be better off staying put instead.

**

But as the hours pass she finds her equilibrium,

Pastes on her smile and dresses for success,

So much to organise, no time for defeat,

Time is running through the hourglass, no less.

**

Her worries are pushed aside to be mourned at a later date,

Oh gosh, the sun is shining, the day perfection,

The birds encourage her with their tunes,

So she runs with her positive attitude, her “go girl, set your direction.”

**

Her bustle of life gets her started,

She packs, discards, gives away and tosses,

The days are counting down upon her nervous energy,

As she ignores the thought of upcoming losses.

**

Her heart races, she battles to breathe,

Her thoughts turn to the impossibilities,

She stops, catches her breath, scolds her thoughts,

Her decision has been made, set free of responsibilities.

**

She has no choice but to run with the show,

She’s come too far, there’s no turning back,

There’s a lot to learn, wisdom to grow,

And searching for the strength she fears a lack.

**

The future calls, in fact it heartily screams,

It yells her name even when she wishes for peace,

Her signature lies on the open road,

Waiting for her to shed her fear and open up to her release.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

I have no doubt she'll be perfectly fine. She is a warrior, afterall.

Ah, if only were brave enough to take the first step. Loved your poem my kindred spirit!

  • Have no fear, my friend. There's still plenty of time for all the preparations you need to make. Just keep doing some each day & before you know it you'll be on your way.
