The Bastard's Swan Song

A poem about evil and reckonings.

Remember the smiles

Lucky to have shared the best of times

Explored the world together

In ways that we would always remember

Remember the times we shared

How we weathered the rockiest of storms

Walking hand in hand through the tortured lands

Fearing nothing that befell our path through the mystery

Remember the soft and quiet nights

Giggling about nothing and everything in between

Always fun to run free and wild

Into the wellspring of the new worlds complexities

Remember the plans we laid out

Our own and special map to the stars

How together we believed anything was possible

Unafraid to go unto the world and tackle any odds

Remember the pain and the darkness as it fell upon our world

Nothing that we'd seen prepared us for the worst of man

Deep into the heart of evils that we'd stared

We thought we could survive more than anyone else can

Shattered, did it all become in such an instant

Like it fell apart in the blink of an eye

Everything gone in a cosmic minute

Every inch of me wanting to lay down and die

Remember the feeling of seeing your sweet smile

Like a god among the world as you looked upon me

Sometimes it was more than I could stand, so scary

To think of the challenge I had before me

Anguish and great sorrow surrounded the days

Desperate to find the answers to such pain

Hunting for something to fill that visceral need

Succumbing to the worst growing seed

Remember when my heart was yours

Following you to the next life would have been easier

Seeing you fall was foever etched into my memory's eye

Even after the wells were empty and I could no longer cry

Remember when something else filled my soul

For it left this world with a whimper

Replaced by something strong and bold

As I hunted while my blood simmered

Think not of the things I couldn't have done before

For they no longer were on the table

There be nothing left inside the hollowed out shell

Beside the hopes of seeing you again

Remember my arms around you

As your blood rushed from your body

The twinkle in your eye began to flicker

As I knew help would come far too late

None reached us in time

Not to keep my anchor in this world

And there was something coming

For the devil who came deserved a reckoning

Remember my final words

A promise made in grief

The good man finally died

What was left only knew one path to relief

Remember that I could hunt

Across the universe I would have gone

It took an oath and some time

To hear the gunman's song

He could hear it too

As I reminded him of what he'd done

His certainty that I couldn't do it

Was his final time to be wrong

Remember, somewhere inside

If you're looking down

Inside, it's still me

But not the same as I was

Remember that it was the world that made this happen

Bring no excuses for the things I've done to get here

For if the world had left us alone

This version wouldn't have been born

Remember, that I'll see you soon

And pray that you can forgive

For what I've done isn't the last

But the beginning of ridding the world of such bastards
