The Basement Knows My Name

Or is it just all in my ears and head?

The Basement Knows My Name

A single bulb swung overhead

Light cut sharp across the stairs

Mold climbed slowly up the walls

Like sickness learning how to breathe

The basement carried human sounds

Soft crying near the furnace door

Every pipe inside the ceiling

Moaned like ghosts beneath the earth

I found old footprints in the dust

Leading toward the narrow crawlspace

My pulse turned violent in my throat

Still curiosity pulled harder

A whisper rose behind my neck

Low enough to freeze the blood

The darkness knew my hidden thoughts

And spoke my name with borrowed lungs

The air grew thick with rotted heat

Each breath tasted sharp and sour

Spiderwebs clung against my face

Like fingers trying to pull me back

An ancient chair stood near the wall

Its legs uneven from decay

Something rocked it very slow

Though silence filled the narrow room

I saw old photographs half burned

Faces scratched with jagged lines

Every pair of hollow eyes

Seemed to follow where I moved

When I climbed back toward the door

The staircase groaned beneath my feet

Still the basement called my name

Like it never meant to let me leave
