The Art of the U-Turn
Finding the Way Back to Yourself After a Farewell
"Turning around is meeting a better version of yourself."
"Some people leave you not because you are not good enough, but simply because you are not suited to be together in the end." Faced with separation, we often fall into a quagmire of self-doubt, constantly asking ourselves, "Did I do something wrong?" or "If only... would things be different?" However, many times, separation isn't about who is right or wrong; it is simply two paths briefly intersecting before heading toward different destinations. Instead of wasting energy dwelling on the past, use that energy to heal yourself in the present.
Here are three practical methods to help you emerge from a low point and regain your strength:
"Emotional Writing": Take out a piece of paper and a pen and write down all your feelings at this moment without embellishment—anger, resentment, sadness, or even longing for the other person. No logic is needed; just be honest with your heart. After writing, you can choose to tear it up or burn it, symbolizing the release of these negative emotions. This process can help you clarify your thoughts and stop being led by your emotions.
"Establishing a New Ritual": Try changing a habit. For example, change your route home from work, try a restaurant you’ve never been to before, or learn a new skill you’ve always wanted to learn. These small changes can help you break free from past thought patterns, establish a new rhythm of life for "one person," and let your brain know: even without them, my life is still wonderful.
"Focus on the Small Joys of the Present": When your thoughts drift back to the past, try to bring your attention back to the present. Take a deep breath and feel the air; focus on drinking a cup of your favorite coffee, savoring its aroma and temperature; or look out the window and appreciate the changing clouds. Find three small things each day that make you happy or grateful; this can help you reconnect with the world in the present and reduce anxiety.
The falling petals and tiny particles of light in the image symbolize the flow of time and the letting go of emotions. Be grateful for that sincere encounter that taught us how to love and made us clearer about what we want.
Let us carry this gratitude and acceptance, gently bid farewell to the past, and stride confidently toward our own future.
