The American Dream
~Adele Pena c2015
That mansion you dream of, on a picture-perfect green hill,
The pond on the side there, the woods further still,
The college degree, and the perfect career,
The 2.5 children, that Friday-night beer,
The smartphone and tablets, a white picket fence,
The dog and the cats, a credit expense,
A TV. Set for every room of your home,
Seasonal tickets in your favorite sports dome,
Multiple vehicles, all without issue,
Quick-fix medications, decorative tissues,
A side-by-side fridge, loaded with foods,
More medications to alter your moods.
Always consuming a life of abundancy,
Daily schedules of a chosen redundancy.
The 'American Dream' that so many desire,
That is NOT what sets MY heart on fire.
The house on the hill, with the fence all about,
The vision of arrival, of fortune, of clout,
That dream of fulfillment, so many want to claim,
I think you should know, not all share that aim.
There are still dreamers of a life worth living.
There are still people who focus on giving.
There are those content with just their needs met--
No desire for extras, no pride or regret.
There are yet dreamers of humanity healing.
There are yet people with deep compassionate feeling.
There are still those who see their brothers in need,
And instead of competing, they will share all their feed.
The true dreamers, who will make this world whole,
Are dreaming for others to also feel full.
