That’s Not Love

It couldn’t be.

Your regret trickles down my fingers

my flesh is raw and rugged

my skull is cracked and in every crevice, I carry your thoughts

they were too heavy for your shoulders

so I made them mine.

Your heart was bleeding, shedding pieces of itself

dripping on your skin, painting your loneliness crimson instead of grey

I knew you didn’t like the color red

so I put your heart in the hollow cavity where mine used to be

and beat, beat

yours beats now in me

fast and furious

the chasing of the sun by a vengeful moon

who hurt you? I ask

but your silence pours over the icicles in my veins

and peels my flesh away

kerosene

your pain became the fuel, who lit the match?

the fire melted my fingernails,

my nail beds dissolved into wax

I carried your story for so long

my ribs started to crack

This morning the rising of the sun

pierced through the crack above my lacrimal glands

and my cheekbones were dry

because all the tears I owned,

I shed for you

so, I ripped out your angry heart

from the crack where my ribs just gave up

now it’s dying in my arms

melting in my fingers

your blood is pooling on the ground near the space

where my shoes used to be

cuz last year I gave mine to you

when your feet were cold

and my toes froze

and with every ounce of you I inhaled,

I lost a little bit of me.

and you cried and called it true love

but love don’t make you bleed.

I could’ve held your hand, as you fought those wars

but you handed me a gun and made me fight them for you

if nothing’s left on these bones of mine

you devoured my soul by laying yourself on me

and I was just trying to breathe

you made me breathe for you

that’s not love, it couldn’t be

that’s death, and you were the poison killing me
