Bodies made traffic and, far away,
they moved through the black of the building site.
-
That night should have been the last,
the sky alight with its violent red blaze.
-
It’s still a haze, even now,
Hell not far above,
unmoving, in the clouds.
-
Eyes shot open at the distant
muffled sounds of (only maybe) sleeping bodies.
Groans and snores.
-
Can’t sleep on my back for the nightmares,
the last one saw the Earth swallowed whole.
-
Absorbed into nothing; dust and ash
where it all once stood.
-
A thousand lines on the mind, the filtered music quiet
and muffled, but
still not far behind.
-
Doubt and the howl of the wind,
the rain against the plastic glass nearby.
Lightning to end all things.
-
One moment, you’re asleep
and the next, the phone rings.
-
We couldn’t sleep through the smell as
the crashing rage of a dying sea
-
dragged sodden piles of ash
to the shore each night
-
soon to be lost amidst
the dried out sand.
-
We’ll never make it
to any other land.
