Years of idealization I

gave you, seeing only life, love.

But your warmth —Promethean—

wanted too much from me.

I am no eagle,

your sacrifice

one I could

never

bear.

Thank you for reading my nonet for the Vocal "Breakup Nonet" Challenge! This poem was inspired by my "break up" with my childhood dream of becoming a veterinarian. For most of my early life, I was convinced I would be a vet and help animals. I realized around high school that being a vet would require me to euthanize animals, and I discovered, even if this procedure was the kindest for the creature, I would not be able to do it.
