Textures, Hearts and Colours

I laid my heart in colours,
Pressed pink into the blue,
And every little ridge of paint
Held something that I knew.

The yellow came like sunshine,
Still warm beneath my hand,
It settled in the broken parts
No words could understand.

The purple held my secrets,
The things I could not say,
I brushed them into little hearts
And let them choose to stay.

The green grew round the edges,
Where hope had room to start,
A tender little wilderness
Around a painted heart.

And grey was there beside them,
For life has shadows too,
I did not paint the sadness out,
I gave it room and hue.

The black lines curled between them,
Some tangled, others crossed,
They held the scattered colours close
So none of them were lost.

I left the surface uneven,
Each layer thick and deep,
Some feelings rose towards the light,
Some settled down to sleep.

And there among the colours,
With every mark still shown,
My heart could rest upon the page
And call this brightness home.
