Tea With the Moon

One sleepless night at half past two,
A gentle knock came at my door.
I opened it to find the moon,
Who’d never visited before.

She tipped her hat and softly smiled,
“May I come in and share your tea?
The stars are dreadfully late tonight,
And heaven’s rather dull,” said she.

I poured a cup into fine china,
She thanked me with a silver grin.
The kettle started humming jazz,
While laughter floated on the wind.

A penguin wearing dancing shoes,
Arrived with marmalade éclairs.
Behind him came a striped giraffe,
Combing clouds instead of hair.

The teapot sneezed confetti out,
The sugar cubes began to sing.
A goldfish read the morning news,
To butterflies with broken wings.

The wallpaper grew little doors,
Each leading somewhere stranger still.
One opened to a field of clocks,
That only chimed when they stood still.

A rabbit wearing purple silk,
Invited thunder in to dine.
The lightning asked for raspberry jam,
And cloudy lemonade with lime.

The moon confessed she hated nights,
“They’re far too dark for one like me.
I wish the sun would take a break,
And let me shine beside the sea.”

We laughed until the candles danced,
The carpet floated from the floor.
Even gravity gave up,
And wandered out the kitchen door.

As dawn arrived, she stood to leave,
And paid with buttons made of light.
She winked and said, “Next Tuesday then?”
Before she vanished into white.

Now every evening I make tea,
And leave one chair beside my own.
For once you’ve laughed beside the moon…

You’re never really quite alone.
