Tarnished

When you realize it was never love

By Rae StearnsPublished 4 months ago 1 min read

The buckets of love I have shouldered

They have nearly broken my back

As I bathed you again and again

How long was it going to take for me to realize

I cannot get you clean

The silver I thought I saw was plated

This sickly green is what remains

The blood runs from my fingers as I scrub

But I cannot absolve us of our sins

The damage is done, the fire long lit

Burning down to ashes

I couldn't keep maintaining it
