SWEET WINTER
A winter landscape imagined through the language of sweets.
The day broke with a crunching silence
Still twilight clung caressing the clouds
Creeping crawling covering the sky
Like black candyfloss whispering, winding, weaving
Frost covered each liquorice twigged tree
As if sprinkled with sparkling sugar
That glistened in the cowering custard sun
Too cold to be a fisherman's friend
Thunder clapped but the show went on
And as aniseed balls rained down
Winters fondant icing dribbled down distant hills
Brown sugar smothered the streets
Looking like treacle trickling down spearmint grates
Ice pops drooped down dangling in the wind
Nature's own sweet wind chime
Jingle jangle jumping to the ground
Cracking crunching crashing
Like toffee tipping from a tray
The white maltese moon needs no noose
To hang low in the milk chocolate sky
A sweet marshmallow snowball
Like a polo mint without its hole
The day flew by in a flash yet no lights went out
On this the shortest day
Darkness burst back like bubblegum
Smelling strangely of cough drops
Soon days will last lingering longer
As sweet winter dissolves and deliciously deserts
