Sweet Child

A pride poem

In the mirror I catch a glimpse

of the child I once was.

I lock eyes with her

and give her a worn smile.

Sweet child, I begin,

trying to prepare her for the world to come.

You’ll love with all of your heart,

so freely that it soars like a bird in flight,

yet they’ll shoot it down without a fight.

Your love will overflow

and bathe many bodies in it’s light.

Yet still they’ll question if it’s right.

Your gender will bind you, hold you too tight.

You’ll loosen those straps, it’ll be alright.

Every time they hurt you - another scar,

you’ll build then like constellations

and claim every scar.

You’ll find people who embrace you,

those who understand you,

those who think and speak like you

and love just like you do.

Though the storms seem heavy now,

There will be days filled with rainbows

and colors to paint the spectrum of you.
