I think that I shall never see

a poem lovely as a tree

Oh, dear God, no.

The cypress spreads her needled fronds,

knees rising in river ponds.

That’s a little better.

Let’s all make some inane rhymes

Pretty ditties for these times.

Forget about our neighbors

while we praise the lord,

Condescend to the people

living in discord.

Sing a song of stolen hope

Dance in circles, speak in tongues,

tie a noose into the rope,

ignore the one unjustly hung.

God is good to me because I’m better than you.

I must do my best to look humble,

hide my pride,

and watch you crumble.

These stupid people are distracting me from praising the lord.

I pretend to be a friend,

take advantage where I can

while I judge you to the end.

You really cannot ever be

holy and righteous, that’s for me.

I need you to stop talking about your problems—I can’t be late for bible study.

I tell you that I’ll pray for you,

but this is what I really do:

I judge you, blame you for your strife

it offends my perfect life.

I’ll sit here and throw my stones

From this glass house I call my home.
