Sunlight-Shimmering

Eternal Sky: A Lyrical Odyssey

By Asad RusselPublished 2 years ago • 4 min read

The dawn's sky, midnight’s blue,

In boundless wealth of splendor, you appear time and again,

Beyond the helpless city's prison walls.

Here swirls dense coils of smoke,

Fierce furnace fires blaze uncontrollably here,

The crimson pebbles are smeared with the desert’s heated breath,

Covered by mirages.

Countless travelers’ souls

Search in vain, finding no path;

Their feet entangled in the rigid chains of oppression;

O steadfast azure, in this dungeon bound by a million laws,

You’ve shattered illusions with your magical wand!

Amidst the clamor of the crowd, I sit alone pondering—

What distant enchanted city’s mystery, what sorcery

Have you brought, solitary, to the blood-stained shore of reality?

Spreading your crystal light across the sapphire expanse,

Wings of a silent dream-peacock!

From my eyes, the wounded earth’s blood-script fades away,

The endless sky ignites with Gauri’s radiant flame!

Earth’s tear-drenched sands, sun-scorched beaches,

Torn clothes, bare-headed mendicants, this merciless royal road,

Millions of dying souls in these prisons,

This dust—laden with smoke, vast darkness—

Dissolve into blueness—on enraptured eyelids,

In conch-white clouds, in the starlit night of the clear sky;

The earth’s worm-eaten, worn-out shell

Breaks at your fleeting touch, O sleepless distant realm of dreams!

O boundless azure, eternal dreamer in celestial heights,

You cradle worlds within your silent gaze—

A cosmic womb where stars are born and die unseen.

In your embrace, time dissolves like morning mist;

Eons pass as fleeting breaths, yet you remain unchanged,

The timeless witness to creation’s endless dance.

But here below, beneath your tranquil skies,

The earth groans under the weight of human despair.

Its rivers run dry, choked by greed’s relentless grasp,

Its forests whisper laments for vanished kin.

Mountains stand shattered, their peaks razed by ambition’s blade,

And oceans churn with sorrow, swallowing cities whole.

Yet even amidst this ruin, there blooms defiance—

A fragile flower pushing through cracked concrete,

A child’s laughter echoing in war-torn alleys,

An old man planting seeds he’ll never see sprout.

These small acts of hope pierce the shroud of gloom,

Like shafts of sunlight breaking through storm clouds.

And you, O sky, watch it all unfold—

The triumphs and tragedies, the beauty and decay.

Do you weep when empires fall? Do you rejoice

When lovers meet beneath your starlit canopy?

Or do you simply observe, detached and serene,

As mortals play out their brief, flickering lives?

Tell me, ancient one, what secrets you hold—

Of galaxies spinning in perfect harmony,

Of black holes devouring light itself,

Of comets streaking across infinity’s canvas.

Is there meaning in this vast expanse,

Or are we but specks adrift in a random void?

Here on Earth, we seek answers in rituals and prayers,

In science and art, in love and in loss.

We build temples to gods unseen,

Compose symphonies to capture fleeting joy,

Write poems to immortalize moments that vanish

Before the ink has dried upon the page.

But still, the questions linger, haunting our dreams:

Why does suffering exist? Why must beauty fade?

Why do we yearn for connection, only to find separation?

Perhaps the truth lies not in answers, but in asking—

In the act of seeking, we become seekers,

And in seeking, we glimpse divinity.

Look now at the horizon, where day meets night—

A thin line separating light from shadow,

Life from death, hope from despair.

It is here, in this liminal space,

That miracles occur:

A sunrise painting the world anew,

A sunset bidding farewell with golden tears.

The wind carries whispers from distant lands—

Voices of ancestors who walked before us,

Their wisdom etched into stone and soil.

They speak of resilience, of courage, of faith,

Of standing tall against storms that sought to break them.

Their legacy lives on in every tree that grows,

Every river that flows, every heart that beats.

And so, we carry forward their torch,

Lighting paths through darkness uncharted.

Though fear may grip us, though doubt may paralyze,

We press onward, driven by something greater than ourselves.

Call it destiny, call it purpose, call it love—

Whatever it is, it burns brighter than any flame.

Now turn your gaze upward once more,

To the heavens ablaze with constellations.

Each star a story, each galaxy a chapter,

In the grand epic of existence.

We are part of this narrative, however small,

Our lives threads woven into the cosmic tapestry.

Imagine, then, what might lie beyond—

Beyond the veil of perception,

Beyond the limits of language and thought.

Could there be realms where time bends backward,

Where past and future merge into one eternal present?

Might there be beings who see dimensions we cannot fathom,

Who hear music in silence, who feel warmth in emptiness?

If such wonders exist, they remind us

That reality is far stranger—and far richer—

Than anything we can conceive.

And perhaps, just perhaps,

The divine resides not in some distant heaven,

But in the very fabric of the ordinary:

In the rustle of leaves, the ripple of water,

The touch of a hand, the beat of a heart.

So let us cherish these simple gifts,

For they are portals to the infinite.

Let us honor the earth, which sustains us,

And the sky, which inspires us.

Let us walk gently upon this sacred ground,

Leaving behind footprints of kindness, not destruction.

And when our journey ends—as all journeys must—

May we return to the source from which we came,

Dissolving back into stardust,

Carrying with us the memories of laughter shared,

Of battles fought, of dreams pursued.

May we leave behind a legacy of light,

So that others may follow in our footsteps,

Guided by the same eternal spark.

Thus, O sky, I offer my gratitude—

For your patience, your wisdom, your grace.

Through you, I have glimpsed eternity,

And in doing so, found peace within myself.

Though I am but a fleeting shadow,

I am also a fragment of the infinite,

Connected to all that was, is, and will be.

Let the winds carry this prayer aloft,

To the farthest reaches of the universe.

Let the stars bear witness to my vow:

To live fully, love deeply, and dream boldly,

Until the final dawn breaks over the horizon,

And all becomes one with the eternal blue.
