It’s silent this morning, and it seems so bright out,
There are no birds singing because they’ve gone south.
I open my curtains to the light of the first snow,
It is almost blinding; it has a natural glow.
Yesterday we had the sun, no jackets in sight,
Now we wake to it having turned winter overnight.
The quiet in the air is something I always appreciate,
A calmness that leads to a relaxing kind of day.
I turn on my kettle, to start a cup of tea,
And pull out my heated blanket and a book to read.
I light the fireplace, something I rarely get to do,
It will be a cozy day in, I may even make soup.
I set my tea by my chair, grab a blueberry muffin to enjoy,
I hear my doorbell and look out to two smiling young boys.
“Can we shovel your snow, ma’am?” One asks with a smile.
“Of course, how much? Is 20 bucks worth your while?”
They nod, I am pleased, I use their phone to make payment.
I give thanks and they get started on the snow-covered pavement.
I hear the shovel strokes, it's a pleasant rhythm and flow,
I snuggle into my chair, thankful it's not me shoveling snow.
I dunk the tea bag into my mug, the steam now smells so sweet,
Then I grab my book and cover up, folding my blanket around my feet.
The first sip of tea on a cold morning, is always so satisfying,
If I said I didn’t hum each time, oh, would I be lying.
I always keep a full kettle ready, on snow days at home,
Knowing me, I will finish at least three mugs on my own.
Snow flurries fly by my window, and I look up at the sky,
I smile in gratitude, the purity of it is a dopamine high.
I see the kids wrap up their shovels, and head to their own house,
Since the snow is starting again, I know I’ll see them around.
The crackle of my fireplace is so soothing to my ears,
I look forward to this cozy situation at least once a year.
I can finally open my book and dive into the words on the pages,
Today I chose a fantasy, where they battle faeries of all ages.
Winter blues like to hit me, but today, I feel just fine.
It is the perfect Sunday morning, to start wintertime.
