When I danced with rainbow wands and streamers

and from moonlight thrones sent Sky Dancers flying

When jumping through sprinklers, we were screamers

Hot pink plastic and fun without trying.

When I played a spy in neighbors’ backyards

And wrote notes on the nothing that transpired

When Pokémon were preferred payment cards

And I refused naps when I was tired.

When days stretched the length and depth of the pool

And I played mermaids, yet preferred to dance

When I put stock in the concept of cool

Then shook off that clunky concocted trance.

When I was one of the Three S-keteers

I learned conforming couldn’t quell my queer.
