The summer stretches out,
Endless, hungry, seeking.
The heat like warm breath on my face.
The longer the sun touches skin,
More like my mother I become.
The same rainbow hues she bore
Swirl over me and mix.
My father's child no more
I am summer instead of winter.
The ocean quells sweat, aches.
Sand between my toes,
Clear blue under waves.
The water is deep, endless.
On my arm, the map
Of pigmentation returns.
Freckles darken as
Hair streaks with washes.
The fish flit, I dive
One gulp of air is stretched
Till the surface beckons
And waves bobble me.
I am a different version,
Same name, same face
But crankier, my brow furrowed
As I melt in a sandwich of blue.
I fight back the sun
With water and relief.
The waves sing against rocks
And I drop below again to hide.
