You ought to know that summer's literate
In fact, she is quite a bibliophile;
A lack of books can make her feel irate
And summon storms that sunny peace defile

All ink-stained wretches must their duty do
And supply summer with countless pages:
Vile horror, tender romance, crime that's true;
Poems sweet and sublime for the ages

If those of us who claim to be writers
Permit petty concerns and distractions
To stay our pens, like bruised, tired fighters
Summer will punish our sorry actions

Accept this challenge: scribblers, pay heed!
Give summer more reading than she could need
