Grandmother’s Back Porch

Summer

Summer Night

I awaken

Heart pounding

Wet with my own sweat

Knowing

Dreaming

Searching

I am standing on the top stair

Looking upward

At the stars

Searching

For home

Summer night

Knowing

I will not come back here

Dreaming

Of home

Searching

For home

I descend the stairs

To my grandmother’s back porch

Knowing

I cannot come back here

Dreaming

Of home

Grandmother’s back door

But it will not open

I cannot open

Darkness and locked doors

It is twilight now

Summer night

Knowing

I can never come back here

Again

Dreaming

I run

I run

Down down down

So many many many hills
