What does summer feel like?
It feels like the heat of the sun beating down on your head, warming your skin as the day stretches endlessly ahead. It feels like the refreshing touch of lake water flowing through your hair as you dip beneath the surface, surrounded by the gentle movement of waves created by passing boats and the rhythmic crashes against the shore.
It is the cold, shocking feeling of first stepping into the water on a hot summer day, the moment your body adjusts to the chill before surrendering to the refreshment. It feels like floating on a raft in the middle of the lake, the sun resting on your shoulders while you drift peacefully without a care in the world.
For a moment, time feels endless, even though it only lasts briefly. It feels like standing barefoot beside a warm fire with cool feet seeking comfort from the heat. It feels like running across a soft green lawn, your bare feet brushing against the blades of grass as summer surrounds you.
What does summer smell like?
It smells like salt and watermelon kisses, the sweetness of summer lingering on sun-warmed skin. Coconut-scented sunscreen drifts through the air, mingling with the salty crunch of chips enjoyed under the blazing sun. There is the smoky richness of sizzling smokies and melting s’mores, blending together into something warm and familiar.
It smells like firewood crackling at dusk, like damp hair fresh from the lake, and like towels hanging to dry on a sunlit rope. Nearby, strawberries and blueberries are rinsed in a basin outside, their sweetness rising into the warm air. The delicate scent of roses and blooming flowers fills the space, layered with the grounding aroma of cedar trees and pine.
The smell of freshly cut grass ripples through the air, sharp, green, and alive. The scent of cold water hitting hot pavement rises quickly, creating a refreshing burst before disappearing into the summer warmth. Somewhere nearby, steak sizzles on the barbecue, the rich smell of pepper and smoke filling the air and reminding you of the perfect evening, a delicious dinner, and a glass of wine waiting to be enjoyed on a balcony.
What does summer sound like?
You can hear children laughing in the distance, their joy carrying on the warm air. Birds sing back and forth to one another, mimicking melodies like a beautifully woven orchestra. Wind chimes lightly dance as the breeze moves through the yard, their soft notes drifting between the sounds of dogs barking gleefully and a bicycle passing by; gears shifting, a small bell ringing in greeting.
Waves rush toward the shore in steady rhythm, while somewhere nearby, water trickles over rocks, a waterfall finding its way around small obstacles before gathering into a gentle, rushing hum. Sand scatters under quick feet, and joyful squeals rise from children at play. A swing set creaks softly: the rusted chains groaning in a slow, familiar rhythm.
There’s even the quiet, imagined sound of vanilla ice cream melting and being licked away in the sun.
A neighbor starts their lawn mower, the low whir building into a mechanical heartbeat as it grazes the grass. And through it all, the sprinkler turns: hissing softly, then ticking: tick, tick, tick—pause—before scattering into droplets that patter gently against grass, leaves, and the warm, waiting ground.
What does summer taste like:
It tastes like a refreshing iced coffee, the kind that only feels right on a warm summer morning, with the first sip bringing a cool sweetness that awakens your senses. It tastes like a slice of fresh watermelon bursting open in your mouth, dripping with sweetness and leaving behind the unmistakable taste of sunshine. It tastes like freshly picked raspberries, their tartness and sweetness lingering on your lips after gathering them straight from the garden.
It is the rich, unforgettable taste of a perfectly cooked steak, seasoned just right with herbs and pepper, each bite tender and full of flavour. It is the smooth taste of red wine touching your lips, a slow sip enjoyed while the evening settles around you, leaving you wanting just a little more.
It tastes like ice cream melting on a warm afternoon, sweet and simple, yet somehow capable of bringing pure happiness with every small lick. It tastes like salty, crispy chips shared under the summer sun, the kind that makes you reach for one more handful without even thinking.
It tastes like the faint freshness of lake water touching your lips as you dip beneath the surface, breaking through the calm stillness and emerging with a smile. It is the taste of summer itself, a collection of little moments, familiar flavours, and memories that stay with you long after the season fades.
This is what summer should be.
