“Hold onto this,” he said. “No matter what I say, don’t give it back until I’ve saved enough for the car.” His mom raised an eyebrow but didn’t ask questions.

The next few weeks were a struggle. Terry still craved sweets, but without easy access to his money, he couldn’t give in to temptation. Instead, he focused on his goal. Every time he felt the urge to buy candy, he thought about the car he wanted—the freedom to drive wherever he wanted, whenever he wanted.

By the time summer rolled around, Terry’s savings jar was nearly full. He’d managed to save $1,850, just $150 short of his goal.
