He’d spent countless afternoons standing at the checkout counter of the corner store, looking at the handful of candy and asking himself, Do I really need this? The answer was always yes.

It wasn’t that Terry didn’t understand the stakes. He knew every dollar spent on sweets pushed his dream car farther out of reach. But logic didn’t stand a chance against the siren call of a Snickers bar.

His breaking point came one Friday night after he’d tallied up his spending for the week. Terry had made $60 mowing Mr. Gordon’s lawn and doing chores for Mrs. Harper down the street.
