“Anti-depressants are for losers who are afraid to feel.”

The circle glares at me

as I try to pass cruelty

as enlightenment.

“Hearing your stories makes me realize

that I am not a freak.”

“I am better than all of you.”

My voice gets louder

when no one stops me.

“I don’t know why I’m here.

I’m fine.”

I say it again.

“I’m fine.”

I can’t tolerate silence

and I need the room

to feel as jagged as I do.

“If I were you,

I’d kill myself.”

If I stop talking,

I might hear

what I am actually saying.

I am not fine

If I stop talking,

someone might answer.

I want to clarify: the only things in this poem that I actually said are "hearing your stories makes me realize that I am not a freak" (was trying to say that I felt understood and these were my people) and "I'm fine" which obviously wasn't/isn't true---it's closer to true, but I am a work in progress.

The other statements were said to me by someone who needs therapy.
