Before Waking

You lie on my chest

Under the blanket, warm and cozy

A comforting presence

Our place of mutual slumber

Under the blanket, warm and cozy

You sleep, deep and still

Our place of mutual slumber

I strain to hear you breathe

You sleep, deep and still

No swish, no flick, no big stretch

I strain to hear you breathe

Still waters are running too deep

No swish, no flick, no big stretch

Not even when I say your name

Still waters are running too deep

Why won’t you answer?

I peek at you under the blanket

Unseeing eyes stare past me

I pull up the blanket with a start

Not yet!

You lie on my chest

Under the blanket, growing cold

Cold comfort of an empty shell

As you dream your endless dream.
