STEP INTO AUTUMN’S SEA OF MAKE-BE-LEAF

What does autumn look like from up in the sky,
Where the wandering stars go twinkling by?
Do they look down upon the earth below,
And wonder where all the summers go?

Do they see the leaves of orange and gold,
Or do they see a world growing cold?
Do they see the maples dressed in spice,
Or autumn’s warning of winter’s ice?

Perhaps the stars wander over the sea,
Wondering what all those colours could be,
As leaves from the trees along the shore
Float on the water for evermore.

And there in the darkness, the starlight shines
Upon the leaves from the autumn pines,
Tinging their colours with silver and white
As they float on the waves this autumn night.

Do the stars see beauty we cannot see,
A wonderful world of make-belief?
A sea full of colours, a sky full of dreams,
Where nothing on earth is quite what it seems?

Perhaps one star would like to fall
To see the autumn leaves and all,
Not to burn out or fade away,
But to rest on a leaf till the break of day.

And what would that wandering little star find
Among the leaves being tossed by the wind?
Would it discover that autumn’s a place
Where summer and winter meet face to face?

Is autumn a season, or something to love,
A beautiful picture viewed from above?
Or is it a warning that winter is near,
Bringing the coldest days of the year?

The stars have watched for a million years
The changing seasons, their smiles and tears.
They’ve seen the leaves fall time after time,
Yet still they wonder why autumn’s sublime.

And I sit below them, wondering too
What autumn looks like from their point of view.
Does the earth look golden, or silver, or green,
Or like the most beautiful dream ever seen?

I’ll never know what those stars believe
When they gaze on our autumn’s falling leaves,
But perhaps there’s a world beyond what we see
Where autumn lives on in make-belief.

So step into autumn, come wander with me,
Where the stars shine silver upon the sea,
And the leaves float away beneath skies so wide,
With a little bit of starlight along for the ride.
