Dead leaves crunch underfoot

crisp colors fill the sky

from bright hues of blue across

the daytime skies to

orange, red, vibrant hues of foliage

mud from rain on a dirt road squelching

under tires and soft falls of hooves

Pumpkins and squash adorn

each doorstep – sometimes more than

one, skeletons gracing lawns

and ghosts hanging from tree limbs

the caw of a crow and

the aroma of damp leaves, pungent

and wonderfully satisfying

the soul stills to listen to the beauty

of the softly whistling wind

as it sweeps leaves over the street

in preparation for November
