Stalking Sorrow

Escaping Grief

By Carrie HoppePublished 3 months ago Updated 3 months ago 1 min read

The steep climb to clear my mind

Leaving me winded with every step

My heart pounding to cover the pain

But shadows of sorrow behind me crept

……

Seeking solitude to heal my soul

Unwieldy natural forces abound

Something deeper moves closer

Amplifying my fear with every sound

……

My eyes are open and searching

Ready to meet impending danger

But what I fear might be lurking

Is not that of someone stranger

……

I move further through the trees

Trying to escape its powerful grip

With each unkept path I take

I lose myself in an unnatural slip

……

When finally I stop wandering

I realize that I am not alone

The stalker is none the farther

From my broken bones

……

The shadow behind me

With its relentless sorrow

Was with me yesterday and today

And will still be here tomorrow

……

But something inside me moves

A resolve to face unending grief

To not let this unwanted intruder

Steal my soul like a hidden thief

……

And with this newfound strength

There is a shift in the wind

And nature becomes my healer

And my heart becomes my friend

……

With a final step I emerge from the trees

The shadow of sorrow lost behind me

It no longer has a stronghold

My soul has been set free
