Spectrum

My color is not yours to water down.

We are red.

Blending into the sunsets,

Colors cascading, flowing from below our eyes.

We stand high. on mountain peaks and up on trees,

Voices travelling across plains of garnet.

Red yellows, crimson lies, ruby lifts, scarlet hues.

Empty rooms - we stand in excluded because they can’t stand our

Orange.

Saying hello to the sun, waving goodbye to birds.

Harbouring cowardice words stapled to the tongues of others on walls to show

What we’ve overcome.

Powder packed between rib cages so tightly

They won’t be able to see us cry

Yellow.

Howling into the dark, the night sky joining our hearts

Outside of windows we gaze on our stars

Making sure they remember to shine.

Dark undertones scraped across skin,

The vast expanse of the mix fills our palettes

Undeterred when they tell us we’re using the wrong

Green.

Leaves, trees, grass, life is where we reside.

Welcoming guests, always leaving the door unlocked

To let in the smell of honey,

Keeping our bones in line

Giving just enough leeway for us to dance.

Our music notes hum brighter than their

Blue.

Cerulean understandings into the ones we’ve lost and why they’re gone.

Attempting to conjure up ideas on how to welcome these thoughts.

You are allowed here, in my brain

But my soul is currently under construction.

They say to hold your fingers before they begin to write words

That aren’t yours.

Ideas fusing with these

Purples.

I am no longer fond of being afraid.

The rush of the unknown keeps me up at night but, for different reasons this time.

I know now they try to water us down because we are too bold.

Too different.

They take away our stars

Throwing dour looks our way, bleeding their black into our skin.

I am no longer fond of the white, for I have finally accepted my spectrum.
