Sound in writing is like swag

Author's Note: I listened to a lecture series tape from 2024, about using sound in writing. It was from The Writers Workshop at Authors Publish.

I had no idea what they were going to talk about, but I found it interesting and decided to pay attention to some of the points that were shared. I have started my beginning attempts on some of it below.

It all made sense, but I think it will take a lot of practice to get any of it right, except for the rhyming. I have worked on rhyme for some time now.

Today, I went to write with a pen and paper

Water is where I was headed for this caper

Why caper? I wished to try out sound in writing

Thinking it would be really super exciting

~

My writing is different when writing it with paper and pen

rather than on the computer. I will try sound then.

I didn't have one! No pen in my purse, no pen in my car.

Where are the millions of pens that I own? Far

from me at the time. I went to see grandson to get one

but he was sleeping in, and was not aware of my request

I waited for ten minutes and then drove on. Done.

It was okay, he wasn't responsible for my quest.

~

Sound is what my goal is for today.

Yes, I am using rhyme on this day.

I use rhyme most everyday

Except for a specific format on this Sunday.

~

Assonance uses the vowel sounds wrote together

in a sentence hence the fence closes well when we clench

our fist on open doors and pull up upon the glued shutter

thinking of a time when tying it too tight to untie

~

Consonance is the repetition of the consonant sound

Music makes me mildly melodramatic, which is also

using alliteration when all words start with the same

first letter. A tautogram in poetry.

~

Onomatopoeia, say that five times fast

Naming things by vocal expression.

Clap, boom, bang - fireworks

scares critters - quack, moo, bark

meow, baaa, snap, pop, crack

more carnival and fair noise beep, buzz, hiss

~

There is more and more to look at today

and to work on. However, enough for this day

Everyday is not a Sunday and it's time to play

Root beer and lazing around for me, okay?
