Oh the boys up in the north are going away,

To fight for King and country they'll say.

To another cold war on another cold day,

To march on bravely, fight, and slay.

Boys from the south as young and gay,

Just as foolish and proud as they.

So cheer on your boys as you may,

And be sure to salute the graves they lay.

But spare a thought for their wives who pray,

And for their mothers who weep night and day.

Death is never worth the pension or pay,

Life is a terrible thing to just give away.
