Soft-bellied Prey

A poem about softness, stigma, and choosing kindness.

Wasn't I
Supposed to
Remember something?

Yes, I'm
Sure that I
Was supposed to.

But
There's a
Void in my head

Where
That thing
Should have been.

It's felt
Draped over
The piano's innards.

Muting
An affect that
Didn't need much help.

I am a bird
More days than
Than I am a human.

Prey in a
Place that values
The hunger of the predator.

I don't
Have those
Kinds of hungers.

But I
Do wonder
If that's the thing

That I
Misplaced
In my memory.

If I've lost
The memory of
Predation, then I'm...

Fine
Being some
Soft-bellied prey.

I'd rather be
The one wounded
Than do the wounding.
