Society no longer Carefree

Gone are the days

By Gabriel B. ShamesPublished 6 months ago • 1 min read

The face of kindness gazes back at me

through layers of glass.

Each layer is a year gone…

Cloudier and cloudier than the one before.

~*~

My optimism has faded,

My society no longer says I can be anything,

or do anything…

…that dedication and innovation are the answers.

~*~

This culture…

hallowed to the bone,

raided, beat down… sorrowful where hope used to be.

~*~

What do the children have to look forward to?

We used to think social progress, at least…

but that was stabbed in the back,

right before breaking another finish line.

~*~

They see what we see,

which is nothing right.

They hear what we hear,

which is everything wrong.

~*~

O face of kindness, why did we forsake you?

Attacks breed more attacks…

then even from the kind-hearted.

And none of those can bring you back.

~*~

I see you slipping away…

no longer able to see you, as glass piles up upon glass…

as fogginess fogs the fogginess further.

We weep for you — our dishonored, disowned, and disappeared kind society.
