Social Media Tedium

Chewing gum for the soul

The bedside light offers warm sleepless light

My phone shines blue upon my face

My fingers type fast pitter-pat

Dissipating my dreams

I glance around my bedroom, safe and warm

As the rain beats down outside

And the storm of my nightmare still reverberates

Painfully inside my head

Instagram and YouTube soothe my soul,

Drawing me into other peoples worlds

While TikTok skits, and cat vids

Offer chewing gum for the soul

After several hours of screentime concentration

While my brain lies disengaged

I feel ready to risk nightmares

To escape this social media tedium

I close my eyes and relax at once

My mind giving way tonight

I sigh and escape to a dreamless state

My phone discarded at my side

My breathing deepens, as a smile plays on my face

One night’s rest is of the premium

And I finally earn a night of bliss

Without nightmares coming unbidden,

Or any more social media tedium
