So Summer Would Never Die

My heart warmed all summer and in winter it won’t die

So Summer Would Never Die

I painted my garden flowers,
So summer would never die.
I caught their lovely colours,
Beneath a bright blue sky.

I watched them from my window,
Their petals wet with rain.
And knew that when the frost came,
I’d long for them again.

So out came all my brushes,
My colours, bright and new.
I sat beside my flowers,
And painted what I knew.

The pinks were bright and lovely,
The reds were warm and deep.
I gathered up their beauty,
And made it mine to keep.

I spread the paint on thickly,
Each petal standing proud.
I heard the bees beside me,
Their little hum so loud.

Some leaves were curled and crooked,
Some stems bent to the ground.
I loved their little differences,
And painted all I found.

I couldn’t paint their perfume,
Or catch the warm July.
But I could save their colours,
Before they said goodbye.

Then autumn crossed my garden,
And flowers bowed their heads.
The wind blew fallen petals,
Across the empty beds.

I stood beside my window,
And missed their gentle sway.
Then turned towards my painting,
Where summer chose to stay.

Now when the frost is heavy,
And clouds are cold and grey,
My flowers greet each morning,
As bright as any May.

I painted my garden flowers,
And now I know just why.
My heart still needs a summer,
That never says goodbye.
