Little Johnny opens the new cereal box.

Wow! Colors, oh so bright.

He’s had healthy, boring cereal before, but never this type.

Little Johnny knows not that his short-term energy will soon be in flight.

+

Unknown shapes waterfall down as little Johnny pours a bowl with milk and spoon.

He smiles and imagines holding the prize before morning cartoons.

He is happy his parents are gone. They left for work, several hours before noon.

No one is there to give him mundane tasks, no one to ask, to clean up his room.

No one to monitor the mess, the spills, or his stains.

+

Little Johnny relishes the sugar rush, oh, the sweetest of grains.

He grins with every bite, every spoonful, alive and free.

Home alone to savor a snow day, oh, how simple life used to be.

And I know this because little Johnny used to be me.
