The struggle to appear to be yourself
Carefully curated, polished, refined;
Your shame and guilt and strange flaws on the shelf
You go to dinner, hoping love to find

But winter has its own, sadistic plans:
To unleash a blizzard into your life
Your careful performance, the mad snow pans
At your umbrella’s failure, laughter’s rife

The affable accountant your friends chose
Is quickly turned into a popsicle
No sensation remains in his broad nose
To frostbite, he might lose a testicle

The winter laughs at your hopeful design
This night, no fresh, new romance will be thine
