Small Talk

Or True Connection

By Colleen Millsteed Published 3 years ago Updated 3 years ago 1 min read

Good morning, how are you?

OMG don't answer that, unless you're fine and well,

The question wouldn't have been asked

If they seriously thought you'd tell.

Small Talk!!!

***

As you walk into the doctors reception

You'll be asked, "How are you today?"

Hello.........You're at a doctors surgery

Seriously, what do they want you to say?

Small Talk!!!

***

Small Talk is one of those social pleasantries

That is inherently unpleasant,

An introverts kryptonite

Society needs to make obsolescent!!!

***

Small Talk creates boundaries between people

It flees from depth and meaning,

Personal questions are inappropriate

And any emotion un-seeming!!!

***

Small Talk allows two people

To hold an entire conversation,

Without the need to get to know one another

And authenticity dies in relation!!!

***

Small Talk is meant to be light and fun

Except the conversation is flat and boring,

Its predictable exchange with predictable results

Quite frankly is worth ignoring!!!

***

For those of us that hate small talk

We hope to collide with that one brave soul,

Who asks the inappropriate questions

And laughs outside of society's control.

***

That person who is unapologetically authentic

Where beyond the barrier of superficial chatter,

They crave depth over shallowness

And we find the true connection that matters.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
