Author's Notes
This poem was written for Vocal's Breakup Nonet Challenge and was loosely based on a dream I recently had.
A Nonet is a nine-line poem that starts with nine syllables in the first line and decreases by one syllable per line, ending with a single syllable in the final line. This form allows for a gradual narrowing of focus that packs a punch. Here is the syllable structure of a Nonet:
- Line 1: 9 syllables
- Line 2: 8 syllables
- Line 3: 7 syllables
- Line 4: 6 syllables
- Line 5: 5 syllables
- Line 6: 4 syllables
- Line 7: 3 syllables
- Line 8: 2 syllables
- Line 9: 1 syllable
